How I Met My Boyfriend In The Middle Of A Pandemic

As of February 2020, I had never used a dating app.
I hadn’t ever downloaded one just to see what it was like or even as a joke. But when the pandemic hit in March and going out to bars and meeting people became a distant memory, I decided to try it out just for fun. With some help from my friends, I made a Hinge profile. Going in I had no expectations, and was just looking for something entertaining to do during the extremely boring and monotonous days of quarantine.
I would scroll around every night to see who looked cute and a sent a few likes here and there. I would get some likes too and would start boring conversations with random strangers. Saying that out loud sounds very weird but it gave me something to do, and during a worldwide pandemic, you gotta do what you gotta do. I started talking to a few guys pretty consistently but nothing really stuck. Sometimes we would move to Snapchat but then it almost always fell off after a few days when we ran out of things to talk about. But then things changed.
I opened my Hinge app one day and looked at the first guy on my feed. Hinge put a “most compatible” badge at the top so I decided to take a quick scroll. On Hinge there are little prompt sections on each profile where users can answer questions. This guy had a prompt which said he knew an authentic Mexican place with the best tacos so I was immediately interested. He looked super cute and very my type so I sent a like, not thinking anything of it. A couple hours later he matched with me but sent the conversation to me so I had to say something first. Now I had to think of something cute, witty and creative to say which is definitely not my favorite part of Hinge.
I decided to stick with the taco theme and asked him where this authentic spot was and we got to talking. At first it was the normal Hinge small talk that I was used to, but we had some pretty good back and forth. We talked for a few days on the app and we had really great conversation compared to some of the other people I had talked to. After a few days, he claimed his Hinge was glitching a sending messages weirdly and not in the correct order ;) so he gave me his phone number and Snapchat — a smooth move I must say.
Everything had been going well so far so I decided just to text him and see what would happen. We started texting all day every day for about a week and then I added him on Snapchat and Instagram and we started snapping a lot as well. Things were going really well. Even though he was basically a complete stranger, we never ran out of things to talk about and had really great banter. He was sarcastic and funny and always made me smile even through a text. Sometimes we talked about total nonsense like ranking our favorite types of cheese and other times we talked about more serious things like the pandemic and work.
This went on for about 3 weeks and then he asked if we could FaceTime. I was very nervous but very excited as well, and we planned to FaceTime one Friday night. That night we talked for hours and my face hurt from smiling so much. The next week, we planned to meet up and go on a date. Of course I was worried about basically meeting a total stranger but texting constantly and facetiming first really helped to calm my nerves.
We met up at a park in between where we both lived and he brought those authentic tacos that he had talked about on his profile. We ate the tacos and just laid in the grass talking all night. It was an amazing date. We started seeing each other more often and after about three months we decided to be official… and the rest is history.
