One of the big shockers that comes with being an adult is the realization that you now actually have to cook for yourself every time you feel hungry. Of course, takeout is always an option, but cravings fade and balances in your bank account fade faster.
OK, so you don’t actually have to cook a 5-course meal whenever your stomach growls, but it might be time to graduate from throwing a couple chicken nuggets into the toaster oven.
This is where we get to the art of the sandwich. There’s something beautiful about a classic coldcut sammie on white bread, but that is NOT what we will be discussing today. As someone who self-identifies as a carb queen, I’ve developed a few sandwich variations that will transform your childhood favorite into an easy, adult-approved meal.
1. Make It Saucy

If you haven’t been adding sauces to your at-home sammies, please never speak to me again. This is by the far the easiest thing you can do to take your morning toast from basic to bursting with flavor. Avocado toast is already a pretty trendy dish, but a drizzle of somethin’ takes it to the next level.
Did you know how easy it is to make your own sriracha mayo or honey mustard? I mean, the ingredients are literally in the name. I typically do a 1:1 ratio for either sauce with a little more of the heavier ingredient so that the sauce doesn’t get too ~watery~, but you can play around with both to get your desired level of spiciness or mustardyness (???). Also PLEASE season your avocado. Salt, pepper, and garlic will do.
Sriracha Mayo
1 tbsp mayo
1 tbsp sriracha or desired hot sauce
Honey Mustard
1 tbsp spicy brown mustard
1 tbsp honey
Dash of olive oil
2. Make It Gourmet

A caprese sandwich is lowkey a classic. It’s also super easy to make this sammie look restaurant-worthy and will make you feel like you’re grabbing a quick lunch on the coast of Italy.
I left tomatoes out of my sandwich, but totally throw them in there. I just personally think uncooked tomatoes add absolutely nothing to any recipe except for wetness, and I have no clue why you would want that. Fresh mozz, balsamic, basil, and a shake of red pepper flakes are enough flavor to satisfy your savory craving and will still look pretty on your insta feed.
3. Make It Cheesy

I’ll be straight up. I didn’t eat grilled cheese as a kid. It freaked me out a little. However, something I can totally get behind is an adult grilled cheese.
Let’s take this moment to appreciate the elegance and boldness that is brie cheese. This lil lady is the star of the show in this sandwich. Grab the leftover bread that your fave Italian restaurant always throws in your takeout bag that no one eats and smother it with brie. Or whatever cheese you want, but NO AMERICAN. That’s vile. Pop this baby in the toaster and voila.
I drizzled the same honey mustard on this masterpiece as my avocado toast above because yum. You should definitely add apples to this if you have them.
And that’s it! 3 ways to make a sandwich feel like an adult meal without adding any extra crazy ingredients or time commitments. Who said adulting is hard?
