Halloween is Overhyped

I vividly remember that even in high school, I already had some concept of Halloweekend. It’s supposed to big the biggest, blowout party weekend of the year. Maybe it was from older kids telling me about their college Halloween experiences, or maybe it was from watching students go crazy in “I’m Shmacked” videos. Either way, I entered my freshman year expecting Halloweekend to be absolutely insane.
Now let me get to the point real quick here: Halloweekend is extremely overhyped. Yes, it’s usually 3 days of going out and dressing up, but unless you go to a southern school, it’s also 3 days of freezing your ass off because you sacrificed a cute costume for warmth.
Let’s talk about costumes for a sec. I start thinking about what I’m going to be for Halloween as soon as the weather gets a tiny bit cold. I have a Pinterest board of costume ideas that I’ve been pinning to since freshman year (I’m a washed up senior now, in case you forgot). Still, my costumes never turn out exactly how I want. Honestly, creating a bomb costume is expensive and not really worth it for one night.
What I’m trying to say here is college kids create a lot of high expectations for Halloweekend, which is probably the reason why it always kind of flops. We can all relate to hyping up a weekend of going out soooo much that it ends up not being as fun as we thought it would.
Who decided Halloween is the biggest weekend of the year? We still have sylly weeks, first weekends back after breaks, and of course, the last weekend of school (pls don’t remind me I’m graduating). Any one of these can easily be epic, which is why this year, I’m setting the bar low for Halloweekend. I’ve accepted the fact that my costumes aren’t going to be top quality unless I shell out big bucks that I definitely don’t have, and in general, that the weekend will be pretty similar to any other weekend in college.
I’m hoping that adopting this attitude will give me some kind of karma or something and turn Halloweekend 2K19 into a weekend to remember. I recommend that anyone in college turns the hype down a notch on this holiday. Setting the bar too high and creating too much hype for going out never ends well - we all know this.
